MotoGP Carbon Fiber Seat 3D Scan

Carbon-fiber race motorcycle seat with reference dots under blue structured-light scanning

The problem

The customer needed to fabricate replacement and backup parts for an organically shaped carbon-fiber race motorcycle seat — a part with no readily available molds or drawings.

Hand-laid carbon parts are one-offs by nature — there’s no mold on a shelf and no drawing to fall back on. To make backups, you first have to capture the original.

We scanned the seat at 0.2 mm resolution, picking up its compound curves and organic surface exactly as laid. The raw scan was cleaned into a watertight mesh and handed off, ready for CAD.

From there the customer could model a new mold and start producing replicas and spares for their racing program — turned around the same day.

Structured-light lines sweep the organic carbon-fiber surface during the 0.2 mm scan.
